Description

The Toilet - Patient provides an enclosed, lockable room with an accessible toilet and handwashing basin for use by patients, visitors or staff with disabilities (with or without assistance). A baby change table may also be located in this room.

Additional Considerations

~ The room layout and all fixtures, furniture and equipment (FF&E) are to comply with AS 1428.1 and NZ 4121. ~ Signage with tactile Braille nominating 'All Gender Accessible Toilet' required to room, including noting if the room is a right-handed or left handed room (depending on layout). ~ If the Toilet - Accessible is located in a patient care area for use by patients, the nurse call system should be included and emergency release door hardware should be installed to allow staff access in emergency situations. An operational model for responding to calls from staff/patients will be needed to support the inclusion of a nurse call system. ~ If the Toilet - Accessible is to be dedicated for use by staff, access control (e.g. a swipe card reader) may be required if this room is provided in a public area or patient care area. ~ The entrance to the room is to be flush with the adjoining floor for access in commode chairs/wheelchairs or with other assistive devices. ~ Mobile duress coverage is to be assessed and planned at a department level and coverage is to suit local security and WHS policies and operational service requirements.
