Additional Considerations
~ The Bulk Store should be located with ready access to the loading dock area. ~ Some departments, such as pharmacy, renal dialysis and pathology, will have bulk storage spaces that are managed independently. ~ Type and extent of storage solutions for this room will depend on the departments to be serviced and operational models for stock and equipment delivery. ~ Where a 'direct to imprest' model is used, consumable inventory is stored at a supply chain distribution centre and delivered to the hospital already packed into trolleys specific to the clinical area and immediately delivered to those areas. Long term storage is not required and less area is needed near the loading dock. ~ A 'central bulk store' model refers to goods being delivered to the hospital in large quantities and stored in a central bulk store. The process involves the delivery of goods on pallets, goods are then checked, unloaded, and placed in a bulk store by hospital supply staff. Consumables will then be picked and packed from the central store and delivered to clinical units and other areas as required. ~ Automated or motorised equipment may be considered to assist with the safe and efficient transfer of supply trolleys throughout the healthcare facility. Where tugs and AGVs are being considered, it is important to confirm clearances, door widths and turning circles within the room, in the adjacent corridor and along path of travel to all services / departments. ~ Refrigerated storage requirements to be confirmed at project level. ~ Wall protection is recommended to protect wall linings and finishes from damage from impact. The height of the wall protection will be dependent on equipment and trolleys frequently moved through the space; a height range of 900mm minimum up to 1500mm is recommended depending on trolley and equipment selection. ~ Hold open door hardware may be required to allow for easy movement of pallet jacks and trolleys in and out of the room. ~ Controlled, staff only access is required.
