Description
The Patient Lounge provides an environment away from clinical areas and/or patient bedrooms for patients and visitors to meet and socialise. It is an area where family groups can visit together with patients.
Hours of Operation
Up to 24 hours (dependent on unit operating hours)
Occupancy
up to 6 patients / visitors; 1-2 staff intermittently
Additional Considerations
~ A range of occupants will need to be accommodated including adults, children, able-bodied people as well as people with disabilities. ~ The size of lounge areas can vary depending on service requirements; add 1.2m2 per additional person and allow 1.5m2 for additional wheelchair spaces as required. ~ Access for a patient lifter or patient bed may be required depending on patient cohort and service requirements. ~ The Patient Lounge is often located in close proximity to or combined with a Bay - Beverage. ~ An operational model for responding to calls from staff/patients will be needed to support the inclusion of a nurse call system and is to be determined based on service requirements. Patient to nurse call button and handset is optional and may be provided in units where high patient observation is required. ~ Duress provision will be dependent on service requirements. ~ Provision of a hearing augmentation system may be required depending on television and amplification system provided. ~ Furniture shown in this Standard Component is indicative and items selected will vary depending on patient cohort. Considerations regarding furniture include assessing the weight rating of all seating, including for bariatric capacity as required, providing a mix of chairs with and without arms to support patient mobility, and providing built-in furniture or securing furniture where there may be safety/security concerns. ~ Room may be designed to be open to a corridor. Additional transfer of noise to adjacent patient care areas to be considered if room is not enclosed. ~ The display of artwork and cultural assets will be guided by the facility. A rail display system may be considered to minimise risks and allow for flexibility in display. Ease of cleaning for infection prevention and control also needs to be considered when selecting artwork. ~ Natural light and external outlook is essential.
