Anteroom

Standard Area6
Ceiling Height2700mm

Briefing

Description
The Anteroom provides the space and amenities for staff and visitors to don personal protective equipment (PPE) before entering an isolation room and to doff and dispose of PPE after exiting an isolation room. The Anteroom also supports the maintenance of air pressurisation in the adjacent isolation room.
Hours of Operation
24 hours
Occupancy
1-2 staff / visitors intermittently
Additional Considerations
~ Transport of trolleys and equipment through the anteroom, including large mobile items such as mobile x-ray machines, is to be confirmed to suit clinical service requirements to ensure adequate clearance is provided. Operational models for cleaning trolleys and equipment after use within the isolation room are to be confirmed at project level. ~ Provision of an intercom connected to the patient handset is to be confirmed at project level to support models of care for patient observation and communication. Intercoms may be provided within the anteroom and/or in the corridor near an observation window into the bedroom. ~ Type and quantity of PPE to be stored, and therefore the extent and configuration of the storage solution for PPE, is to be confirmed at project level to meet clinical service requirements and local infection prevention and control (IPC) policies. Storage options include trolleys, wall mounted dispensers, custom joinery or freestanding/mobile shelving/storage units. The selected storage solution must support operational models for decentralised stocking of PPE and/or decanting from a central clean store room. ~ Where seismic activity is a concern, selection of storage solutions should include consideration of elements that reduce risk of injury to persons present in the event of an earthquake (e.g. horizontal rails or lipped shelves to reduce potential for items falling, use of drawers that latch, ability to secure freestanding storage items to the building structure, whether the storage solution selected will maintain stability when subjected to certain loads/movement, etc.). Refer to relevant building codes, seismic design guidance/standards and local WHS policies. ~ The layout shown in this Standard Component does not support the movement of beds/stretchers to the bedroom via the anteroom. It assumes movement of the patient on a bed or in a wheelchair occurs through the bedroom door directly to the corridor as required. ~ Interlocking anteroom doors will reduce the escape of infectious respiratory particles by not allowing both doors to be opened at the same time. This should not impact staff workflows given the time for health care workers to don and doff their PPE. An emergency break glass release switch will mitigate the potential for staff being entrapped within the patient room or anteroom. Refer to 'Isolation Rooms - Engineering and Design Requirements' for more information.
