Description
The Anaesthetic Preparation Room is for the holding and preparation of patients on a bed/trolley prior to their surgical procedure. Depending on operational processes, local, regional or general anaesthesia may be administered in this room or once the patient is taken into the Operating Room. Direct access to the Operating Room is required.
Hours of Operation
Up to 24 hours
Occupancy
1 patient; 1 carer / support persons; up to 3 staff
Additional Considerations
~ Anaesthetic Preparation Rooms are typically provided to facilitate patient flow and support patient preparation. Provision to be determined during planning with consideration of local operational policies and patient throughput. ~ If serving an Operating Room with cardiac protected power, the Anaesthetic Preparation Room should also have cardiac protected power. ~ Provision of reticulated nitrous oxide is optional and must be confirmed to suit local jurisdictional policies and operational service requirements. The use of nitrous oxide in operating theatres and procedural suites and emergency departments is declining due to a range of clinical and environmental concerns. Reticulated systems have been found to increase leakage of nitrous oxide (a potent greenhouse gas) to atmosphere, can increase facility operating costs and potentially expose staff to nitrous oxide. Reticulated nitrous oxide and associated scavenge outlets are not mandatory for any healthcare service and point of care cylinders can meet clinical requirements for the majority of healthcare facilities. Due consideration must be given to a range of operational considerations including monitoring and measurement of usage, management of leakage, WHS requirements relating to the use of cylinders, approach to the provision of scavenge where cylinders are used, appropriate storage for cylinders, and security of gas sources given it is used as a recreational drug. ~ Ready access is required from the Anaesthetic Preparation Room to shared support spaces such as medication fridges and blanket warmer bays. ~ Automated doors with motion or elbow activation are provided to the Operating Room from the Anaesthetic Preparation Room. Buttons/sensors should be appropriately located in relation to the door, including consideration for approach and movement of patients on beds and mobile equipment. 2-gang buttons that support the opening of either one or both leaves of the door as required are desirable. ~ Spout and tap placement at the handwashing basin should provide sufficient height to allow washing up to the elbow. The selection of handwashing basins and tapware should be coordinated and approved by clinical staff as a single unit. Type of spout to handwashing basin (i.e. gooseneck, straight, etc.) to be confirmed to suit local infection prevention and control policies. ~ Provision of an articulated examination light or ceiling recessed examination light to be confirmed to suit service requirements. ~ Depending on the use of x-ray equipment within the adjacent Operating Room, radiation shielding may be required to this room and is to be assessed by a Radiation Consultant.
