DescriptionThe 1 Bed Room - Mental Health, Inboard Ensuite provides a single occupancy bedroom for mental health inpatients. The inboard ensuite layout is used in conjunction with the Ensuite - Mental Health, Inboard (ENS-MH-IN). Alternatively, a nested ensuite layout may be provided (see 1BR-MH-NE).Hours of Operation24 hoursOccupancy1 patient; 1-2 staff intermittentlyAdditional Considerations~ All fittings and fixtures used in bedrooms must be of a type manufactured and marketed as anti-ligature. Requirements for the selection of suitable finishes, hardware, fixtures and fittings (including any weight limits for load release for certain fixtures) must be confirmed at project level based on service requirements, patient safety policies, local design guidance, risk assessments and confirmation of operational models. This includes the door, door hardware, joinery surfaces, joinery hardware, engineering services outlets and any ceiling mounted fixtures and services. All tamper proof and anti-ligature items must be installed in accordance with their manufacturer's instructions.
~ Where an accessible bedroom is required to be provided, anti-ligature fittings may require a performance solution to be provided in order for the room to meet accessibility requirements. This must be considered and addressed at project level to meet applicable legislation and standards (to be confirmed with the project accessibility and building code consultants).
~All glazing (including external windows) is to be Grade A safety glass to comply with AS/NZS 2208 and AS 1288. Toughened and laminated glass with a structural interlayer is recommended. Additional requirements for glazing are to be confirmed at project level to suit the specific mental health environment (i.e. non-acute, acute, intensive care).
~ Window size and minimum sill height are to be confirmed at project level to ensure access to natural daylight and external views from the bed and seating areas within the room. Type of blinds (e.g. integral venetians, integral blackout, etc.) to be confirmed at project level.
~ Doors should support consumer safety, dignity and wellbeing, and be non-institutional in appearance to the extent possible. It is recommended that the door set is selected as a full assembly to ensure the leaf, frame and hardware are coordinated and meet all tamper proof, anti-ligature and anti-barricade requirements when used together. Project should consider the use of prototypes to confirm solution to address all requirements.
~ The inclusion of door top or top and side anti-ligature alarms connected to the emergency call/duress systems may be considered and assessed at project level to suit service requirements.
~ Vision panel is provided for observation checks by staff in consultation with the consumer. Inclusion and size of vision panel to be confirmed to suit service requirements. Controls for integral blind to be provided to both bedroom and corridor sides of the vision panel. Switchable glass may be provided in lieu of integral blind. Placement of vision panel to be confirmed to support requirements for observation.
~ Rooms are to be lockable from the bedroom side, with staff override/master key access from the outside.
~ The ergonomic operation of the door hardware/handles is to be considered as some products are difficult to grip for those with limited hand function.
~ Access control devices, such as card/wristband readers, are optional and provision is dependent on service requirements and operational models. Support for programming and provision of devices is required for implementation.
~ Based on a risk assessment, ceiling height is to be confirmed at a project level in combination with considerations for FF&E selection to ensure consumers cannot reach or cause damage to the ceiling or services located on the ceiling.
~ Unique considerations for Intensive Care and Child and Adolescent areas are to be confirmed at project level to suit jurisdictional policies
~ The selection of finishes in rooms for mental health units is to be carefully considered to support the provision of a welcoming, warm and therapeutic atmosphere and should aim to eliminate an institutional feel. Flooring and skirting selections are to be considered at project level based on risk assessment for provision of alternative options (e.g. timber/MDF skirting in lieu of coved skirtings).
~ Bed may alternatively be provided as a fixed plinth type instead of adjustable height electric bed, depending on service requirements. Clearances around bed to be maintained.
~ Configuration and size of wardrobe is to be confirmed at project level to suit consumer property storage requirements.
~ Provision of safe within the wardrobe joinery is optional and provision is dependent on operational models for property storage. Where provided, shelves will need to be reinforced.
~ Lighting configuration and types (general room, reading, task, night lights, sensory, etc.) to be confirmed at project level. Access and type of switch controls to be determined to suit requirements.
~ Staff assist and emergency call buttons have not been indicated in this Standard Component on the assumption that a portable call and duress devices are provided to staff, and projects must confirm requirements based on operational models.
~ Consider the location of wi-fi access points to ensure strong coverage is provided for mobile duress functions.
~ The provision of USB outlets is to be determined at project level to suit local jurisdictional requirements.
~ Provision of wall mounted television/patient entertainment systems are to be considered and confirmed at project level to suit local jurisdictional and operational service requirements. If provided, ensure that the screen is recessed or within an enclosure with tamper proof fittings and sufficient ventilation.
~ Provision of radar assist sensors to detect falls and monitor high risk behaviour patterns may be considered at project level to suit local jurisdictional and operational service requirements.
~ Co-ordination of the ceiling services on the ceiling is required. It is ideal to reduce visual 'clutter' over the bed and place services out of reach from raised fixed surfaces (e.g. bench). Removal of emergency warning equipment such as speakers/strobes may be considered via a performance solution to patient rooms to reduce the number of services provided on the ceiling within the room. All fixtures provided (lights, air conditioning grilles, detectors, wireless access points) are to be recessed with tamper proof fittings.
~ Anti-pick caulking is recommended for finishing between surfaces.
